With all of the publicity recently received in the cases of the abortion clinic and Holocaust museum slayings, I'm surprised that this crime has not been getting a lot of publicity: An outspoken anti-immigration activist who was at the center of a series of violent crimes in Everett earlier this year now stands accused of the home-invasion killings of an Arizona man and his 9-year-old daughter. Shawna Forde, 41, and two associates in her Minuteman American Defense group are charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree burglary and one count of aggravated assault, according to the...

Voters unhappy with Bush and Congress (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/17/AR2007101700470.html) By John Whitesides | Political Correspondent Reuters, October 17, 2007

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Deepening unhappiness with President George W. Bush and the U.S. Congress soured the mood of Americans and sent Bush's approval rating to another record low this month, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.

The Reuters/Zogby Index, which measures the mood of the country, also fell from 98.8 to 96 -- the second consecutive month it has dropped. The number of Americans who believe the country is on the wrong track jumped four points to 66 percent.

Bush's job approval rating fell to 24 percent from last month's record low for a Zogby poll of 29 percent. A paltry 11 percent gave Congress a positive grade, tying last month's record low.

"There is a real question among Americans now about how relevant this government is to them," pollster John Zogby said. "They tell us they want action on health care, education, the war and immigration, but they don't believe they are going to get it."

The dismal assessment of the Republican president and the Democratic-controlled Congress follows another month of inconclusive political battles over a future path in Iraq and the recent Bush veto of an expansion of the program providing insurance for poor children.

The bleak mood could present problems for both parties heading into the November 2008 election campaign, Zogby said.

"Voter turnout could still be high next year, but the mood has turned against incumbents and into a 'throw the bums out' mindset," Zogby said.

The national telephone survey of 991 likely voters, conducted October 10 through October 14, found barely one-quarter of Americans, or 26 percent, believe the country is headed in the right direction.

The poll found declining confidence in U.S. economic and foreign policy. About 18 percent gave positive marks to foreign policy, down from 24 percent, and 26 percent rated economic policy positively, down from 30 percent.

A majority of Americans still rate their personal financial situation as excellent or good, although the number dipped slightly this month to 54 percent from 56 percent. In August, 59 percent rated their finances as excellent or good.

"Americans are still feeling good about a number of things in their lives, but not about the government's leadership," Zogby said. "They are giving up on this government."

The Index, which made its debut last month, combines responses to 10 questions on Americans' views about their leaders, the direction of the country and their future. Index polling began in July, and that month's results provide the benchmark score of 100.

A score above 100 indicates the public mood has improved since July. A score below 100 shows the mood has soured, and a falling score like the one recorded this month shows the nation's mood is getting worse.

The RZI is released the third Wednesday of each month.

In the 2008 White House race, Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York tightened her grip on the top spot in the Democratic nomination race with the support of 46 percent, up from 35 percent last month.

Her top rival, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, was at 25 percent, moving up slightly from last month's 21 percent. Former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina was third with 9 percent, and about 12 percent of Democratic voters were unsure of their choice.

Among Republicans, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani expanded his lead over Fred Thompson, the former senator and Hollywood actor. Giuliani led Thompson 28 percent to 20 percent, compared to last month's 26 percent to 24 percent.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney jumped from 7 percent to 14 percent and moved past Arizona Sen. John McCain into third place. McCain fell from 13 percent last month to 8 percent.

More Republicans, 18 percent, said they had not made up their mind, leaving room for more shifts in the field. "We still have one in five Republicans undecided. That race is really up in the air," Zogby said.

A majority of voters asked about former Vice President Al Gore said he should not run for the White House in 2008 despite winning the Nobel Peace Prize. About 51 percent said he should not enter the race and 40 percent said he should.

The Nobel award on Friday came halfway through the polling period. The Gore question was asked of 485 likely voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percent.

The rest of the national survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.

    Guys -
I have an approved I-140 in the EB 2 category and I'm changing my employer next month. However, my current lawyer emailed me this morning saying that you can transfer your PD, but not in the same category (EB2). In other words, to keep my PD, I will have to apply through EB1 or EB3 with my new employer. I had not heard of this before and was wondering if this is a true statement. Has anyone successfully transfered their PD within the same category? Thanks.

My wife came here on L2 in Aug-2007 and then applied for EAD
She has been working on EAD since Aug-2007 with Company A
Company A applied for her GC on 18-Aug-2009 in EB2 while she was still on L2
Company A applied for H1 which got approved on 08-Oct-2009 till 01-Oct-2012
We travelled out of US on 10-Dec-2009 and only gave the L2 I-94 on departure, didnt give H1 I-94
She got her L2 stamped from India and entered US on L2 on 03-Jan-2010

Please let us know the following:
Is there any potential of her H1 getting cancelled because she entered back on L2?
Do we need to get her H1 stamped immediately by going to Mexico?
Is her L2 EAD still valid and can she work?

A few readers have posted links already to a statement made by President Obama at the North American leaders summit that immigration reform is a priority for early 2010. Some see that as a retreat from efforts to move the bill this year. But 2009 was not really realistic anyway not because the votes aren't there but because there is a very practical logistical problem of getting a bill done in just four months. The immigration bill is likely to start out at close to a 1000 pages and the drafting is going on behind the scenes right now. Senator...

Bush, Congress Struggle in Public Eye (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/15/AR2007081501271.html) By DAVID ESPO | The Associated Press, August 15, 2007

WASHINGTON -- The Democratic-controlled Congress and President Bush seem locked in a perverse competition for public unfavorability, according to a new Associated Press-Ipsos poll.

The survey shows Bush's approval ratings at 35 percent, and Congress' even lower, 25 percent. Only 27 percent of those polled said the country is headed in the right direction, and 39 percent said they support the Iraq war, with 58 percent opposed.

While Bush's favorability ratings have remained relatively unchanged for months, Congress' support declined markedly between May and July, a dip confirmed in a poll of 1,003 people taken last week.

Asked whether they approve or disapprove of the way Congress is handling its job after seven months of divided government, those surveyed were then prompted to volunteer a reason.

Of the 74 percent of those expressing congressional disapproval, 22 percent said lawmakers generally aren't doing their jobs. Another 20 percent cited a specific issue for their unhappiness. Twelve percent said they disapprove of Congress because lawmakers care only about themselves and their party, while 10 percent cited backstabbing and infighting.

Among those who cited an issue, the war in Iraq was mentioned most often. It was cited by 7 percent of those disapproving of Congress' performance, followed by health care, 5 percent; immigration, 2 percent and employment and wage issues, 2 percent.

The survey was taken as Congress was beginning its August recess, providing a respite from months of unsuccessfully trying to force Bush to change course in Iraq.

Democratic leaders have vowed to renew their challenge to Bush when they return to the Capitol after Labor Day. An autumn clash also looms over federal spending, and Bush has posted veto threats against bills dealing with farm programs, expansion of children's health care and energy.

"I don't think this war is going the way it should be. We're over there for nothing," said Richard Reda, 64, of Nashua, N.H., a Vietenam War veteran and self-described political independent.

In an interview, he said, "I think Congress should go over Bush's head and get these troops back here. There's got to be a way where they can override Bush to get the troops back here."

Maria Guyan, a 28-year-old school secretary from Struthers, Ohio, agreed. Guyan described her politics as "lean Democrat" and said, "I just don't think they're doing enough to keep President Bush from basically going forward on whatever he wants."

She said Congress should focus most on withdrawing from Iraq and improving the nation's education system.

"We definitely need to get out of the war, and we need to basically just realize we cannot run another country in addition to our own," she said.

But Peggy Grandinetti, 69, a Republican from Florence, Ala., criticized Congress for not standing by Bush on the war.

"I just completely disagree of pulling out of Iraq. I think we ought to stay there and finish the job," said the retired medical assistant.

Richard Henson, 58, of Atlanta, Ga., was among the Democrats who said Congress has failed to address a problem with illegal immigration.

"The immigrants are running bills up," said the post office manager, citing health care and school taxes as examples. "We have to pay extra taxes to support illegal immigrants. I don't think they should benefit from our services that we're paying taxes on."

Wes Kangas, 65, a Republican and retired banker in Vancouver, Wash., expressed weariness. "They don't seem to get anything done. All they do is bicker back and forth. After a while it gets kind of old," he said.

Republicans were more likely to say Congress wasn't doing its job, 26 percent, while Democrats tended to cite a specific issue, 24 percent. Among independents, 22 percent said generally that lawmakers weren't doing their job, and 20 percent pointed to a specific issue, a list topped by the war in Iraq.

When it came to judging Bush, 70 percent of Republicans approved of his performance, with 27 percent disapproving. Democrats split 89-9 in disapproval, and 68 percent of independents disapproved.

Congress, by contrast, was held in disregard without regard to party.

Among independents, 73 percent said they disapproved of the way Congress was handling its job, with 23 percent expressing approval. Among Democrats, a striking 70 percent disapproved and 26 percent approved, while Republicans split, 74-23, in disapproval.

The poll's margin of error was plus or minus three percentage points.

    Hi,
I have been granted an asylum last year in July. I sent my I-485 to adjust my status this year on August 24th with the fee waiver form (sending proof of food stamp eligibility and supporting documents.)
Today is October 2nd(its been almost 40 days) and I have not received a document receipt from USCIS (we are a family of 3 and non of us has received anything in regards to this matter)
Please let me know what actions should I take or should i wait?! Is it possible to not get a receipt and just receive the finger print notice in the next few months?! (I just checked texas service center's processing times, and it says they are at March 28th,2010 now)

    Hi,
I got H1-B petition (I-797) approved in 2008 but due to recession, I couldn't appear to consulate office. I did not get a chance to work in US for that employer so I don't have any pay stubs for that employer.

The petition is approved till 2011. And now I am planing to either appear for visa stamping or transfering I-797 to any other sponser.

    My queries are -
A-Appearing for Visa stamping now after long time is right option or is there any chance of rejection?

B-Since My current employer is not able to employ me there,I want to transfer my I-797. Can It be possible? How much risk is there? If it can be done that what is the process of that please?

C-Since petition is valid till 2011, If I get stamped this year Oct / 2010 what will be duration of visa?

    D-Any sponsrs list ?

    Thanks,
    ~Davis

I applied for extension of stay to California Sercice Center. But if I move to Texas, will be my case transfered to VSC??

    Lelica

if it is an extension of B2 status, I don't think your case will be transferred to a different center if you move to a different state. you just have to inform the service center regarding change of address(I think you can send a AR-11 form) this is just my personal opinion. please check with the lawyer who filed your extension or other experts

Has any one else had this happen? Does any one know what can be done regarding this?

    Thanks for your help

    Hi,
you will have to get it corrected, ask you lawyer to file the correction form ( i don't remember the form# top of my head).

As a recent post by an immigration colleague notes, quite a brouhaha has erupted within the immigration bar and among purveyors of immigration case management software over a new outbreak of immigration singularity. The fuss this time involves an electronic form (the new G-28). Beginning October 30, a paper printout of a completed and signed "e-G-28" must be presented to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) every time a lawyer or an accredited nonprofit enters a "notice of entry of appearance" in order to represent a person or entity before the agency. The paper form G-28 has been in use...
